Why the Biblical Creation is Unlike Any Other Narrative | Genesis Chapter 1 Explained
What does the Story of the 7-Day Creation Really Mean?
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” —Genesis 1:1
9 Big Lessons from Genesis chapter 1
1) This is “our” beginning, the beginning of our human story, not His beginning.
2) God created the Heavens and the earth as easily as you and I would drawing on a piece of blank paper. He did it by separating light from darkness. He revealed LIGHT on a dark canvas. When we draw, we normally reveal darkness on a white canvas. We are opposites due to our fallen sinful nature.
3) The fact that God started with darkness and moved to Light is emphasized 7 times in the phrase “there was evening and there was morning.” All fallen, pagan human cultures start the day with light and end up with the night. God moves from darkness to light. Sinners move from light to darkness.
If you have eyes to see, you would recognize the Gospel is wrapped up in the Creation story. Apart from God, humans always move from Light to darkness. But with the Messiah, we move out of darkness into Light.
4) How do we draw? We draw by stepping down a dimension, from 3 dimensions to 2. At the point of creation, God stepped down from His minimal 10 dimensions and revealed our universe, a drawing with only 4 dimensions.
5) God stepped down further to focus on one planet to the exclusion of the rest of the universe, which is His canvas. He is much bigger than the canvas. He is outside the canvas. That planet Earth becomes His main subject is highlighted by the curious fact that the earth was made on Day 1 BEFORE the sun and moon on Day 4.
6) Even more curiously God made PLANTS on Day 3, before the SUN! Plants are OLDER than the sun. Very few humans know this fact: plants existed before the sun because there was a Greater Source of Light since Day 1.
This Light is God Himself. That’s why the sun doesn’t need to be worshipped and sun worship is an affront to God (idolatry, breaking the 2nd Commandment). God went out of His way since the first page of the Bible to minimize the importance of the sun. It’s decoration. It’s a lightbulb compared to His vast energy and power. We ought to worship God who made light and plants before the sun.
7) Another curious fact almost no scientist knows is that water predates light. Water is older than light. Water already existed and covered the Earth before God said, “Light be.”
Water is a 3 aTom element made of H2O. Obviously this is a symbol of the Trinity.
The First H = the Father, the Second H = the Son, and the O = the Holy Spirit.
H2O is before photons, just as the Trinity is before the sun. Again, an admonishment against idolatry—a swipe against the craze of astrology.
8) God stepped down further to focus on one being in the painting, Adam. He was given not only dominion over all things, but as Genesis 2:5 explains, he was necessary for the cultivation of the plants.
Genesis 2:5 (HNV) No plant of the field was yet in the eretz, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the eretz. There was not a man to till the ground,
God fool-proofed the Creation to be unambiguously anti-evolutionary-theory. Evolutionary Theory claims plants existed millions of years before animals. But many plants depend on bees for pollination and humans for cultivation. Few people think about the amount of work to cultivate a fruit bearing garden. Farmers have to prepare many things like fertilizers and manage bee population.
How could most fruit bearing plants exist millions of years before bees and humans existed? They can’t. In the evolutionary timeline these things couldn’t exist until recently: apples, almonds, blueberries, cherries, grapes, peaches, plums, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, squash, sunflowers, lavender, rosemary, basil, mint (all the herbs). What a dreary world for millions of years, then it suddenly became pretty, diverse and tasty with the arrival of bees.
Evolution is a fairy tale for grown ups who ignore science and replace observation with imagination. God made all the flowers, fruits and herbs for humans since Day 3. Humans were then given dominion over them on Day 6. We are the crown of Creation.
9) There are probably endless moral lessons inserted into the first chapter of the Bible. One lesson that I saw today, the first day of 2025, is that it’s hard for God to make pretty things like the stars high above, without humans feeling tempted to worship the creation.
The stars are staggeringly large, beautiful, powerful, shiny, energetic, but instead of appreciating the Creator we end up worshipping horoscopes. This mistake is so grave it’s akin to the objects of your painting worshipping the painting itself. Our allegiance should go to the Painter, who can easily toss the painting and start over.
Deuteronomy 4:19 (NKJV) “And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the LORD your God has given to all the peoples under the whole heaven as a heritage.
