The Big One is Coming. Are There Supernatural Causes of Earthquakes?
Seismic Activities Are Increasing in the End Time…Here’s Why
The Bible explains things that are not obvious to the natural man. For instance, the Book of Exodus has a spiritual explanation for the ten epidemics and climate change catastrophes that occurred in Egypt: they were judgments on Egyptians who had been oppressing and enslaving the Jews, including mass infanticide during Moses’ time. There was no natural explanation for these judgments because 1) they didn’t affect the Jews, 2) they came precisely at the time Moses ordered them.
EPIDEMICS & PANDEMICS
So we learn a principle of justice: when you oppress a group of people for their beliefs, the judgment is widespread sickness. You hurt the bodies of others, your bodies will be hurt. It’s poetic justice. When you kill Hebrew babies, the judgment is the death of all your firstborns. Poetic justice.
This is the supernatural explanation why Wuhan China was the origin of the COVID-19 virus. When I went into China, I knew it would be judged by sickness. Why? Because the Chinese authorities had persecuted countless Christians by censoring them, torturing them, throwing them in jail, and closing down their churches. They treated God’s children unfairly. They hurt God’s people. The same God who judged the oppressive Egyptians had to judge the oppressive Chinese. This is the way of justice.
EARTHQUAKES
Today I would like to point out the Biblical reasons why earthquakes occur. Earthquakes are some of the most mysterious phenomena, in the sense that they appear most unpredictable. We get warnings before a hurricane. We may get warning before a volcanic eruption. But earthquakes seem to come out of nowhere.
Scientists who study coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have observed a correlation between what happens above (on the sun) to what’s happening below (on the Earth). I think this is a reflection of God’s order: to understand what’s going on in your life, don’t look down only, look up! But watching the sun still does not explain the precise timing of the CMEs and the locations on Earth where the CMEs will affect. There remains a lot of scientific guesswork. A spiritual perspective helps complete the picture.
PROVERBS 30:21-23 (NASB95) 21 Under three things the earth quakes, And under four, it cannot bear up: 22 Under a slave when he becomes king, And a fool when he is satisfied with food, 23 Under an unloved woman when she gets a husband, And a maidservant when she supplants her mistress.
The earth quakes in response to 4 human activities. These all relate to pride:
The pride of a servant when he has power over others. “A servant who gains authority over others has neither the training nor disposition to rule well.” (Garrett)
The pride of a fool when he has power to continue in his foolishness. “When a fool is satisfied, it only rewards his folly and gives him the energy and the resources to be even more foolish.” (David Guzik)
The pride of an unloved woman when she gets a husband and dominates over the relationship. Naturally she should not be married, but when she does, she does not become better, but rather grows worse. It is the pride of a woman who lets success go to her head. In the last days, there are many such women ruling over their houses and over their nations. Feminism has demanded equality and there is: an equality of sinning. We will see earthquakes as judgments on pride—the worst sin of the heart.
The pride of a lesser woman dominating over a better, more cultured woman. This is an important illustration of pride to include in the list because in this case, it’s the sin of one woman against another woman. Hagar the maid despised her mistress Sarah after she got pregnant first. If God had left this fourth example out, some will cry, complain and claim that God is gender-biased. No, God is heart-biased. He hates all forms of pride from one human against another human who’s better than they.
The Uniqueness of Women’s Connection to the Earth
It is remarkable that 2 out of 4 (or half) the reasons God gives for the earth trembling is gender-based: an “unloved woman” who gets married and a “maidservant” who dominates over her mistress both cause the earth to tremble. (Note the Biblical term “slave” refers to anyone who labors for someone else. Today both men and women trade time for money, so both can be slaves to Mammon and a human master. The “fool” is also a gender neutral term since any gender can be foolish.)
The pride of ambitious women who want to rule over others is connected to earthquakes. This is a spiritual explanation no one has ever thought of who’s illiterate in the Bible, nor do they wish to understand it. It’s offensive to them. Yet it’s undeniable women have a unique connection to the earth. Biologically women are the only gender to experience “birth pangs” or Braxton Hicks contractions before childbirth.
Jesus used the woman’s contractions as an analogy of the signs of His Return. Eschatologically, this feminine experience has become equated to end time earthquakes (plus other signs) preluding the Second Coming of Christ. The woman’s body going through pregnancy serves as an object lesson for apocalyptic events. The phases of her pregnancy, including her violent birth pangs, give us clues about the stages of the end time. Women are also the gender to experience menstrual cramps. These are like tremors or mini-quakes that link one gender to the earth’s groaning.
ROMANS 8:22 (ESV) For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.
Over and over, the earth is likened to a woman’s womb—it is giving birth to the Sons of Glory; and earthquakes are likened to a woman’s contractions—they are signs the end is near. The more regular and frequent they are, the closer we get to delivery.
In summary, Proverbs lists four spiritual causes of earthquakes. They are one and the same: PRIDE. When someone’s heart hardens and upsets the social harmony and spiritual order, their pride will get judged. When there is enough pride accumulating in the land, the earth itself gets upset.
JAPAN WAS HIT BY THE BIG ONE
It should be no surprise to spiritually enlightened eyes that on March 11, 2011, Japan was hit by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake in the region of Tohoku. The Japanese are some of the proudest people on earth—that’s true in both the positive and negative sense. They believe their nation, culture, customs, and language are superior to others. What else motivated them to start World War 2 in the Asian theater? Why would they go out conquering the entire Asian continent from their islands? Pride. You would have to be proud to assume that your nation can or should rule over all the other nations.
Japan believes in its central importance, to the degree that its national name is “Nihon” or “Nippon” meaning “the source of the sun.” This is why the flag of Japan retains a bright red sun in the middle. The original flag featured 16 red rays coming out of the red dot, but other Asian nations saw this flag as a symbol of imperial aggression and war crimes. It has been modified since its defeat after World War 2.
When I point believers to Biblical explanations of natural catastrophes—there is a logic to justice that’s hidden from unspiritual eyes—one reaction is to assume that I may not like Japan. On the contrary, I love the Japanese. I do not judge Japan at all. Every nation has its own strength and weakness. I know that. God knows that.
God judges all nations fairly. It is we who are missing the whole picture. In His justice, God demonstrates His love. God loves the victims of Japanese imperialism, and compensated them. God also loves the Japanese and gave them a chance to repent. God loves Japan enough to punish her and help her stop the sin of pride.
If we read the Bible impartially, without prejudice, we will find the answers to life’s most perplexing problems. If we read the Bible adversarially, to find fault, we will become more confused by it. Our heart matters. If our heart hardens too much for too long, the earth will react by shaking and quaking. This is the historical truth for Pompeii, the Roman Empire, the modern Japanese, and will eventually be for Israel.
ISRAEL’S FINAL EARTHQUAKE
Israel has fallen into the sin of pride because she has not depended on her Messiah for 2000 years. She has depended on money and the military to sustain her. God wants to give her wealth and weapons to defend herself, but not at the cost of her heart being deceived by arrogance. God wants all Jews to humble themselves and acknowledge that He sent His Son Yeshua as Savior, according to the Scriptures.
This same chapter we’ve been studying in the Book of Proverbs describes the Messiah for anyone who wishes to see.
PROVERBS 30:4 (ESV) Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know!
The writer notes some activities that are attributes of God: ascending to Heaven, coming down to Earth, has power over Nature, created the Universe; then he asks, “What is His Name and what is His Son’s Name?” The only answer given in history as to the Name of the Son of God is Jesus (or Yeshua in Hebrew, which means “God Saves”).
Because the chief sin of the Jews is to reject and blaspheme Jesus, the Son of God as per Proverbs 30, there will finally come a mighty earthquake in Jerusalem before Jesus returns.
REVELATION 11:13 (ESV) And at that hour there was a GREAT earthquake, and a tenth of the city [of Jerusalem] fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
God’s justice is poetic. His judgments fit the crime. These are the spiritual explanations of natural catastrophes no one will likely tell you until you open your heart to Jesus and study Bible prophecy. The Big One is coming.
You can have a part in this important, end time ministry. Partake in my grace, as Paul wrote to his faithful partners in Philippi. “It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.” (Philippians 1:7 ESV) Give a generous offering from your heart and in faith that the ministry will grow and God will reward: www.DiscoverChurch.Online/give
Great article explaining the spiritual reason for earthquakes.. pride of the heart. In His loving kindness, God even tells us the people groups and heart conditions that are pron to this destructive behavior. Conversely, God also tells us humbling ourselves, seeking His face, turning from our wicked ways, He will heal our land. Fascinating concept from the Holy Bible that pre-dates “science”. Read on to find more earth shaking truths from God’s Word. He always gives us simple life experiences to help us understand the supernatural. Thank you, Pastor Steve.
Praying for people to open their hearts and receive the one true and living Savior Yeshua into their hearts and lives.
